The Lufty Cherokee This page is to honor that part of my heritage that is Native American, specifically Oconaluftee (aka Lufty) Cherokee. This is the eastern band of the Cherokee. They did not migrate when the others did to the west. Some were under the protection of several white men. Others hid in the mountains. I am kinda glad, otherwise, I wouldn't be who I am today! The Cherokee blood that runs in my veins came from my father's side of the family who were originally from Proctor, NC in Swain County. Many people from the Western part of North Carolina have some degree of the Lufty Cherokee in their bloodline.
If
ever in Western North Carolina, make it a point to visit Cherokee,
NC and attend America's most popular outdoor drama. It is an
experience you will always remember and treasure.

One
of my favorite spots in WNC was named after Junaluska,
the great Cherokee warrior. Lake Junaluska is so beautiful and
peaceful. I took one of my friends up there and she looked around and
then she turned to my husband and said "She (me) loves you to
have given all this up." (I moved to SC after my marriage.) Have
a look at this breathtaking watercolor of Lake Junaluska:
Another
beautiful lake is Fontana, which is located in Swain County:
